I’m always on the prowl for great ingredients. Whether fresh or ethnic, I can’t resist trying new foods with far-flung origins. My latest discovery is Ingredients Gourmet Boutique. It’s a terrific online source for foods from the Mediterranean, South America and Asia, and the prices are accessible. Ingredients can be sourced by region (i.e., Auvergne, Lazio, Apulia), brand or category (i.e., oil, cheese, fruit), and the site even includes a handful of nice recipes that can help you get started cooking with your new finds.
While Mayor Bloomberg wouldn’t be happy about the capers packed in salt that I purchased, I’ll be using the capers sparingly in my variation of a tuna salad sandwich. Actually, the Italians call it Pan Bagna which is a layered sandwich made with tuna fish (normally packed in olive oil, but I use the water-packed variety), thinly-sliced hard boiled eggs, tomatoes, red onions, zucchini, capers and diced, pitted black olives. Spread between some very good bread and drizzled with a bit of olive oil and vinegar, you have a divine and healthy lunch rich in omega-3 fatty acids, heart-healthy monounsaturated fats, vitamins, minerals and protein.
I also purchased pomegranate molasses for a cocktail I created. The drink is less than 200 calories and packs lots of taste. It’s satisfying and refreshing and perfect for the impending warm weather! Give it a try, and let me know what you think!
