One of the things I hear most from private clients is they want to cook healthy foods, and they want to cook them well—but they’re intimated by the sheer idea of having to face the oven, a new ingredient or an unfamiliar kitchen gadget. If you’ve felt the same, have no fear! My three, easy tips will shatter your inhibitions and get you whipping up great meals in no time flat!
Tip 1: Start With What You Like
Interest is a huge motivator, so start with one dish you love to eat. It doesn’t matter if the item is a smoothie, a piece of fish or a side salad. Assembling something small and simple, and sitting down to eat it will make you feel accomplished.
Tip 2: Pick a Recipe That Sounds Delicious
Begin by selecting a recipe you like the sound of, buy all the ingredients and give it a go. Half the battle is just getting started. Nearly all of the time (and I’ve found this to be true in my cooking classes), once someone begins to cook, it becomes an exciting and almost addicting activity. Why not start with something that gets your mouth watering?
Tip 3: Have the Right Tools
Having the right cooking tools and utensils is essential. You can’t play soccer without a ball; you can’t have a wine tasting without enough glasses, so you can’t expect to cook without sharp knives, bowls, the right cookware and storage containers. Placing a few quality cookbooks in your kitchen, such as The Truly Healthy Family Cookbook, will ensure you have solid meal ideas at your fingertips. Having the right tools makes cooking easier and subsequently, cooking healthy meals a snap.
